Last Updated on 2022-05-07 by Clay

If you are used to work with the terminal in Mac OS, you might want to disable the beeping sound that the terminal autocomplete (or other times) .

It is a bit of distracting sound, especially if you are working.

Today I want to note, how to disable this option. I found some similar question on stackoverflow, but maybe the version of operating system are different, I spend a lot of time for looking the location of option page.

To make it easier to explain, I will also attach some screenshots of the location.

Setting method of different versions

OS X Tiger (10.4 and earlier)

  1. Open terminal
  2. In options select Terminal > Window Settings
  3. In the terminal window click on the drop down form and select Emulation
  4. Uncheck Audible Bell

OS X Leopard (10.5 and later)

  1. Open terminal
  2. In options select Terminal > Preferences...
  3. Select Settings > Advanced (in Big Sur is Profiles)
  4. Uncheck Audible Bell

After unchecking it, you don't need to do anything, and the terminal will naturally no longer hear the annoying beeping sound.
