Last Updated on 2021-06-16 by Clay

A few years ago, many people installed the operating system was used a disc to make a bootable disc. But with the evolution of laptop products, more and more machines have no optical disc drive.

And then, we need to use USB to install our OS.

Today I want to note how to make a simple "Ubuntu Live USB" to help us to install a Ubuntu OS. In addition, "Ubuntu Live USB" can help us to simple experience of Ubuntu environment (system is installed in USB). If you have any machine crashed, you even can use this USB to troubleshoot.

First, we need to prepare our USB device. The following article will divided into Linux and Windows for the record.

Install Ubuntu ISO

No matter which OS we want to use to make the "Ubuntu Live USB", we need to install the Ubuntu ISO first.

You can download from here: http://www.ubuntu-tw.org/modules/tinyd0/

I recommend Ubuntu 18.04, it's a LTS version (Long-Term Support).

Making USB in Windows

In Windows, I recommend to install a software "UNetbootin" to set our USB settings. You can download it from their official website: https://unetbootin.github.io/ .

Official document have a very detailed guide.

Making USB in Linux

In Linux OS, I think it's a simplest way to make it. You can use the "Startup Desk Creator" to make Live USB.

Chose the ISO you want to use, and chose the USB device you want to use, and then click "Make Startup Disk".

Installation

Change the BIOS Boot settings to "USB Boot", and then you can use your "Ubuntu Live USB" to startup your computer (or install your new OS.)

I wrote another article to introduce how to install the Ubuntu OS in past, if you want to install Ubuntu OS by "Ubuntu Live USB", maybe you can refer: How to install Ubuntu 18.04
