[Linux] Using Insync to sync your file to Google Drive in Linux

So far, I didn’t put data too much on my Linux notebook, so I backup my file was very easy. About my program, my code, I always push to Github or private GitLab. I have also written some novels, but I always upload them to Google Drive. So “backup my files” is always a easy thing to me.

But after I started to cat, I’m baffled by a bunch of videos and photos hahahaha.

Okay, all right, I have other videos likes PS4 gameplay. So my notebook have more important items so now backup is a trouble. I don’t like to upload slowly by hand.

I started to find a software which can upload files automatically in Linux. As soon as I found a software named “Insync” and installed it was very easy. Can be done in a few steps.

But my conclusion is: This software is not a “FOSS” (Free and open source software), if you use beyond the trial period you have to pay. I am not saying we should not pay, but It’s also good to try different software before paying.

In Linux, there must be a corresponding program for the desired function, just need to find. I think so.

Ok, let we go!

Download Insync and install

First, we come to its official website: https://www.insynchq.com/i/google-drive-linux

Not just Linux, other versions such as Windows and MacOS. Rather, Linux is less commonly used.

selected your os, version, and then download. Suppose your download file named “insync_3.0.31.40739-bionic_amd64.deb”, we can use the following instructions to install:

dpkg -i insync_3.0.31.40739-bionic_amd64.deb

And we will see the following photo:

“Start Insync”.

For example, I want to use Google Drive.

Selected your account.

Allow it.

And Next.

Next again.

And we can sync! You can download cloud files to a local folder or upload them to the cloud.

The following is a comparison between the official website and other synchronization software. I usually have reservations about the comparison data provided by this official website, but this also reflects how much trust they have in their products. So maybe you can refer to it.

Postscript

So far, I am more interested in finding alternative products, maybe research about Google Drive API is a good idea. I believe there are still many ways to accomplish the automatically backup.
