Use SimilarWeb to Detect Visitors, Traffic, and Traffic Source of a Website

In before I wrote some online tool for evaluating the website and domain value, but most of them are just interesting notes. In fact, when I want to check whether my website was growing, the first time I check was the SimilarWeb website.

Introduction of SimilarWeb

What is so special about SimilarWeb? To put it simply, SimilarWeb is an online analysis platform that provides free website rankings, visitors, traffic, etc. and its analysis methods are partly derived from various website owners’ Authorization of Google Analytics.

Of course, if you only want to analyze your own website, then Google Analytics (GA) is more than enough; but if you want to be able to view other websites, it is important to reply on online analysis platforms like SimilarWeb.

By the way, SimilarWeb has a free version and a PRO version, but if you don’t need to delve into business analysis and marketing strategies, most of functions provided by free version can already be enough.

So, how do we use SimilarWeb, an online analysis platform?

How to use SimilarWeb

First, go to the SimilarWeb website: https://www.similarweb.com/

Then you should see the search field below.

The next steps are very intuitive, don’t hesitate to enter the domain you want to view and analyze! I use my personal website (that is the website in front of you): https://clay-atlas.com

When entering, you only need to enter the domain clay-atlas.com.

Website Rank

First of all, you will see the website logo, the related App (the QR Code application I linked to my website before), and:

  • Global Rank
  • Country Rank
  • Category Rank

Traffic Overview

Further down, you can see the Total Visits, Avg. Visit Duration, Pages per Visit, Bounce Rate… etc. information.

Traffic to your website by country

Further down is the visual drawing of visitors and the traffic source (differentiated by country).

Traffic Sources for your website

Next is to analyze the source of your website traffic:

  • Direct: It may be that visitors who have been here saved the website URL or bookmarked it?
  • Referrals: I’m not sure about this. I found a referral link or Google ad that says it’s a Google domain
  • Search: Find visitors to the site through search engines
  • Social: Find this kind of source for the website by sharing articles from social media like Facebook or Twitter
  • Mail: Is the link opened from the letter
  • Display: Sources of visitors who purchase Google Ads Multimedia Network ads

In fact, I can’t judge whether my 10% direct traffic is a good thing or a bad thing. I basically hope that most of my website’s traffic comes from organic traffic… But it’s meaningless for me to look at the traffic. After all, the website is just Take notes.

But you know, sometimes there is a sense of satisfaction when seeing a lot of traffic. Ha ha.
